Daily Paintworks has begun to issue challenges for artists. I "accepted" the latest--to divide a canvas into small sections and paint ten-minute studies. It's way harder than it sounds. When that timer goes off, it's a jolt! I wanted to throw it across the room. Check out the site to see all the submissions. Very interesting.
In addition to the time limit, I tried a new palette. While I've been using just six colors for a long time, I added a full-range of cadmiums: red light, orange, yellow deep, and yellow. In addition, I used yellow ochre, naples yellow, pthalo blue and burnt sienna. This a real departure for me but I will keep trying it for a while.
I sometimes paint very small studies in a short time and have been thinking about doing a box of matches (it's a small, 32-count box). It will be interesting to try, since I did these 10-minute versions. Each one is about 3"x5.5"
